Murder trial

Arcelie Laoagan, 41, was raped and killed as she walked home from work near a light rail train station in northeast Calgary, Alberta late on the night of Jan. 18, 2008.

Her accused killer Christopher James Watcheston, 24, is currently on trial for the crime. As part of the Calgary Herald’s coverage of the trial, I was sent to get a photo of the area where her body was found.

Standing on the path behind the church, which the mother of five attended, I recalled the memorial march organized by friends and family at the site of the murder Jan. 30, 2008. That day it seemed most of the community turned out to support the family and the message of non-violence. Two years later there’s nothing at the spot to indicate that such a terrible thing happened there.
