World Cup #10 – Birthday in Soweto

This is the first time I’ve had a chance to get internet in a couple days, so I just wanted to say, for the whole world to see, HAPPY BIRTHDAY RAINA!!!!!!!

You turned 9 years-old yesterday and I just wanted to let you know that you’re growing up into such a wonderful young lady and I’m so proud to be your Daddy. I miss you and I love you. It’s perhaps appropriate that on Tuesday, June 22, I found myself in Soweto photographing, among other things, the township’s children. Johannesburg’s formal settlement is perhaps South Africa’s most famous. The township was site of the 1976 student protest and has the only street on earth that has housed two Nobel prize winners, Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela.

While conditions in some areas of Soweto have improved, there are regions where family’s continue to live in a third world state.

Raina, I hope you get the chance to visit a place like Soweto one day. It’s something you’ll always remember and will help you appreciate the life you’ve been given.
